Week 5 — Nov 3-9: (Acts 9-28, Gen 1-3)

Acts Summary:

The book of Acts opens in Jerusalem with the risen Jesus instructing the apostles for forty days and then ascending. The risen Lord promises the Holy Spirit and tells the disciples to be His witnesses. At Pentecost the Spirit comes with wind and fire, and Peter proclaims: ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit … for the forgiveness of sins.’ Three thousand believe and are baptized.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, the breaking of bread, the prayers, and fellowship. Healing the lame man and other signs draw crowds and also stir opposition from leaders. Stephen is tried and killed, becoming the first martyr, with Saul consenting.

Persecution scatters believers, spreading the message to Samaritans and an Ethiopian official. Saul, a fierce enemy, meets the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus. He is baptized and later called Paul (Acts 13:9), a chosen messenger to the nations.

Peter comes to the centurion Cornelius, declares that God shows no partiality; while he is still speaking the Holy Spirit falls on the hearers, and he commands them to be baptized. The growing church in Antioch sends Paul and Barnabas on missions across Asia Minor and Greece. At the Council of Jerusalem, the apostles guided by the Holy Spirit confirm that Gentiles are welcomed without bearing the full burden of the Mosaic Law.

Paul proclaims Christ in synagogues, marketplaces, and councils, planting churches and appointing elders in every church. Despite beatings, prison, and shipwreck, he keeps announcing the good news. The book ends with Paul under house arrest in Rome, freely teaching about the kingdom of God and the Lord Jesus, showing that the gospel cannot be chained and continues to move from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth.
